WOCE research is organized around three Core Projects. Core Project 1 seeks to provide a global data set that will describe circulation, water mass formation and modification, and ocean variability. Core Project 2 aims to assess the inter-basin exchanges, meridional transports, and other large-scale circulation aspects of the Southern Ocean. Core Project 3 is a gyre dynamics study focused on the Atlantic Ocean basins; it is considered necessary for developing and testing general circulation models.
