The U.S. Role in WOCE

The compelling need for global ocean research has encouraged ocean scientists to propose a major U.S. role in WOCE, which is combined with the opportunities presented by innovations in super computers for predictive modeling and in instruments in space and at sea.

Data obtained from individual U.S. WOCE components will be synthesized to meet two primary objectives:

Primary Scientific Objective: To understand the general circulation of the global ocean well enough to be able to model its present state and predict its evolution in relation to long-term changes in the atmosphere.

Primary Practical Objective: To provide the scientific background for designing an observing system for long-term measurement of the large-scale circulation of the ocean.
