Indian Ocean Plans Update
(Updated 2/20/96)

  1. Work in the intensive study area in the Perth Basin was completed during the period June 17 - July 7, 1995 (PIs McDougall/McIntosh). Additionally, funds have been received to allow deployment of mooring array SCM4 during the period The array will consist of 10 moorings with 29 current meters. The array will be retrieved during a cruise from September13-29, 1996.

A closed box study also in this area is approved for May 7-31, 1996.

  2. IR6 - clearance was not received for the first transects along approx. 110°E and 117°E, scheduled for 4/95, to operate within the Indonesian EEZ. The northern stations were replaced by VOS-deployed XBTs. It remains unclear how successful this was. Clearance was again refused by the Indonesian government for the cruise planned for 9/95 (PIs Meyers/Godfrey). This means that there are no high-quality CTD data from the S. Java Current apart from those collected on the French cruises to the region.

  3. ICM6 mooring was deployed during September 1994 (PIs Tomczak/Church) at 20°S, 110°E. The six moorings included 13 current meters and 4 upward-looking ADCPs. The two shallow moorings redeployed in October 1995; all moorings will be recovered in June 1996.

  4. S4 between Perth (120°E) and 170°E was completed 12/94 - 1/95.

  5. Australians to support IX1 at high-density twice per year from 1996. Low density deployments continuing on IX1, IX9N, IX12, and IX22.
