A New Hydrographic Data Set for the South Pacific Ocean: Station Data and Gridded Fields

A new validated hydrographic data set comprising both historical and available WOCE hydrographic data was compiled for the South Pacific Ocean as a part of the WHP Special Analysis Centre workplan for 1996. A method of the data quality control was developed and applied to a number of routinely measured oceanographic parameters (temperature, salinity, oxygen, silicate, nitrate and phosphate), resulting in two products: (1) the validated profile data set and (2) the gridded data set. The available WOCE data was used as a reference to determine parameter offsets for individual historical cruises, caused both by different methods and techniques used. A detailed summary of the performance of the quality control and parameter adjustment procedure is given. To arrive on the gridded fields of parameters at horizontal levels an optimal interpolation method was applied to the data on the isopycnal surfaces. A comparison is made between the isopycnic and isobaric interpolated gridded fields.
