Participation: Collection of nutrient data on NOAA sponsored lines P18, P14S, and P15S; and, a member of the WOCE Hydrographic Programme Planning Committee.

Technical interests: The absence of uniform standards and methods for nutrient analysis necessitates an examination of the overall reproducibility of nutrient data in the WOCE program. A comparison of nutrient data at intersecting WOCE lines is underway and should help determine nutrient reproducibility. Also, long term climate research at NOAA may include reoccupation of WOCE one-time sections. Development of an atlas - with nutrient data constrained by the comparison study - will not only provide a picture of the Pacific at present, but will also serve as a benchmark for observing decadal variability in nutrients during future NOAA sponsored cruises.

Scientific interests: Includes general ocean circulation, especially the deep western boundary current in the southwest Pacific, its flow through the Samoa Passage, and its associated mid-water return flow from the north Pacific. Studies related to other programs include an examination of high nutrient-low productivity waters along P14S and P15S in the Southern Ocean (NOAA-CO2, SO-JGOFS), and the effect of hydrothermal venting on dissolved silicate distributions in the northeast Pacific (NOAA-VENTS).
