I have not been involved in any of Japanese WOCE activities for several years. However, I am interested in the Subarctic North Pacific and its marginal seas, especially relating to the formation and modification processes of the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW). As a member of PICES Working Group 1 and the former chair of the PICES Scientific Committee on Physical Oceanography and Climate Change, Lynne Talley and I summarized the present status of our knowledge on the Okhotsk Sea (PICES Scientific Report No. 2, 1995), as the Okhotsk Sea is the main NPIW formation area. Recently, I discussed the salinity balance in the shelf region of the north-western Okhotsk Sea. Also, I am making data analyses on the water mass modification processes near Japan which would influence on NPIW behaviors. Now, I am one of the co-chairs of PICES/CCCC IP (Climate Change and Carrying Capacity Implementation Panel), and working for making its implementation plan: GLOBEC type studies in the Northern North Pacific Area. The products of Pacific WOCE (both of WOCE modelling efforts and of WOCE data set) would be essential for our planning.

Besides, I have an additional post in JODC and am working for them as an advisor for its future planning. In this aspect, I am keen interest on WOCE data management status, data synthesis by assimilation relating WOCE activities.
