A Steady State Circulation in the Southern Pacific as an
Inverse of Oceanic and Atmospheric Climatologies

Atmospheric and oceanic climatological data are combined with the WOCE S4 section hydrology in the framework of a variational data assimilation scheme into a steady state nonlinear model of the large scale circulation. The reconstructed fields of buoyancy and 3D velocity are dynamically balanced and provide qualitative and quantitative estimates of the circulation features in two bordering regions: the area of the Amundsen and Bellinsgausen Seas and the region of the Ross Sea. Both regions were bounded by 60°S and the Antarctic continent.

Spatially varying covariance matrices and prior estimates of the transports, especially in the coastal regions also enable the model to refine its structure, bringing the resultant circulation pattern "closer to nature."
