Preliminary Results from Chinese WOCE Program

A research program on the oceanic circulation in the western Pacific Ocean has been carried out since Chinese TOGA program was completed in 1990. The program is the contribution of China to WOCE. Acoustic Doppler Current Profiling (ADCP), CTD casts, marine chemistry measurements, and atmospheric boundary observations were made for the program with the emphasis on ADCP and CTD. The cruise sections are shown in Figure 1 and 2. The purpose of the program is to understand the boundary current in the western tropical and subtropical Pacific Ocean, and the related circulation. Some preliminary results will be presented about the thermohaline structure and the current distribution at the workshop in order to discuss the Mindanao eddy, the throughflow between the Indonesian waters and the Pacific Ocean, the origin of the Kuroshio, and its branches into the South China Sea.
