Internal circulation of NPIW: kinematics and dynamics

Using CTD data from Russian "Megapolygon", Japanese repeat and WOCE sections as well as Levitus data we fulfilled precise analysis of NPIW spatial distribution, its seasonal variability and internal circulation. The later appeared to possess significant ageostrophic component.

Analysis revealed general features of distribution of finestructure in and around NPIW layer. Discussed are differences between northern edge of the layer and its central part.

Emphasis is made on the major role of diapycnal (vertical) mixing, which both changes local characteristics of the intermediate water and breaks geostrophic equilibrium, that results in slow ageostrophic drift of the layer. Such a mixing makes NPIW heavier in the north and lighter in the southern areas.

Kinematic and dynamic models are developed and applied for Levitus data analysis.
