Recent Direct Velocity Measurements in the Pacific Deep Western-Boundary Currents

In the 1990's, direct, one to two year measurements have been made of velocities and transports in the systems of deep western-boundary currents in the Pacific Ocean at (a) Lat. 32°30'S, on a line running eastward from the Tonga-Kermadec Ridge; (b) Lat. 10°S, in the Samoan Passage; and (c) several locations off northern Japan. Some of these results are summarized, and some of their implications are explored for oceanwide pattersn and rates of deep circulation.
