Our research group is working on the large-scale subsurface circulation of the Southern Ocean and its extension into the deep South Pacific as reflected in the distributions of anthropogenic chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). We are especially interested in the mixing processes by which recently-ventilated Antarctic waters are so extensively diluted by unventilated waters that South Pacific water fluxes are large while ventilation fluxes are small. Our work follows separate descriptive and numerical modeling approaches. Please see the abstracts submitted by Dong-Ha Min and Stephen Walker for further information.
